Dear Reader,
how time has passed by so quickly .
And so much has happened (again) since the last edition of this much acclaimed Munch Report ,
the one that asks unbelievably stupid questions in order to come up with the most radical, exciting and simple answers.
You should have gotten used to my way of “exploring the unknown” by now, so I will not dwell on it any further. It’s a personal technique that I developed over many years of extensive and uncontrolled, red wine induced thought processes. This technique is now known in scientific circles as “Z TO A” thinking ,
but I have no idea how others were able to get hold of and copy my approach.
Probably some Russian “ brain hackers", in collaboration with Wikileaks, I have no other explanation to offer.
Admitingly this hasn’t made me rich, but at least I have become more apprehensive of a world that is changing dramatically and irrevocably.
And whilst ’STUFF HAPPENS” here on earth as much as in the universe in every second of the past, present and future of our existence, that stuff can never be made undone again. We are driven along the “ passage of time”, and with it, the uncertainty increases on an epic scale.
HOWEVER , THERE IS HOPE !!
The Munch Report gives you guidance in case you feel lost, like a beacon at sea for the mariner to find the right path into the harbour.
The Phoenicians developed that concept already. so their approach will continue to guide us also in this last edition of the current “ Cosmic Sailing” series.
And in case you are disappointed with the content of my musings, don't worry.
Just read something else, like Mikey Mouse, or the Kamasutra.
Same thing.

Here is why I am upset !
Whilst I had covered the sometimes unfortunate experience of car drivers in my previous part 1 of Cosmic Sailing, I would have never ever imagined that somebody took me literally and shot a damn car not only into orbit, but also on its way to Mars. Can you believe this ?? Mr Musk, did you not read my web page. You were supposed to sent a sailing boat, not a bl.... car !!!!!! And don't you dare having a motorbike next shot into orbit . |
Anyway, what's done is done. I only wished someone had asked me before, so I could have given some input to this achievement.
But no, nobody asks me ...anymore !
SO SAD . AFTER ALL MY EFFORTS . UNBELIEVABLE .
But no, nobody asks me ...anymore !

This however can only be good news for Damien Hurst , in case he is able to collect the orbiting remains of the car, copies them, and puts it into a
new exhibition in Venice with the same title as the previous one from last year :
"Treasures from the car wreck of the Unbelievable"
I wish him luck. If it is as good as the previous one,and that was very very good, believe me, it will make his cosmic breakthrough.
So hold on, before I get totally lost with other people's concepts and ideas, let's go back to mine :
SPACE TRAVELLING !

SPACE TRAVELLING !
What frustrates me in all these discussions about exploring the Universe,
is that people seemingly do want to make step 5 before step one,
i.e. travelling the furthest away into the universe the better.
Just to give you some of the dimensions we are talking about, absorb the information on the chart to the left.
But why ?
Why don't we just start where we are and develop in a step by step approach.
As I said in the previous report, we need to cut distances into “manageable” parts, where we can replenish and refuel.
We need a network of “stations” on our way into the unknown,
where we can retreat, replenish, recover, re-design and refuel.
Just as the Phoenicians, and later on the Venetians did.
Makes sense ?
We are not even at present capable to bring a number of people with supersonic speed from one place on earth to the other.
Concorde was scrapped, and since then we “limp” about with speed around 800 km/h max for passenger flights.
But there are solutions of course.
Here is mine, if you except a small diversion from my sailing scheme.

We know , you know, that the earth spins.
But we really don't think about it every day. Fact remains, the reason why we are not being “spinned off” of the surface of our planet is because of “gravity”. However it is also a fact that people living on or close to the equator travel “through space” with 1675 km/h , whilst those in New York still “achieve” 1280 km/h, i.e. the further you are away from the equator, the slower you travel to make one full turn of mother earth. Capisci ? |
Now I have a simple solution for at least some travelling geeks.
On the condition that you want to travel between cities of the same latitude, like New York and Madrid is, for example, just propel yourself with a space craft vertically up, stay there, wait for Madrid to come into sight, and return to earth vertically to land at Madrid airport.
The whole trip covering 5763 km will have lasted not more than 5 hours instead of 8.
One could organise this for other connections such as Washington DC and Lisbon, or San Francisco and Athens, obviously the closer to the equator, the faster. This by the way is the reason why space agencies launch their rockets into space from around the earth’s equator to take advantage of the higher speed because the rocket is already going 1675 km/hour which makes it easier to reach the 28,000km/hour needed for orbital velocity.
This saves fuel or provides a higher load.
The only problem : The way back will take longer !
OK, OK,
it was just a suggestion, just trying to be creative, not like you guys, sitting in front of the telly watching Arsenal loosing just another match !

But now you see already the difficulties.
The difficulties of achieving speed on earth due to lack of technology and gravity continues into space travel.
With the technologies of today,
we are not in a position to conquer the universe for the next foreseeable millenniums.
Gravity will restrict us from launching heavy loads into orbit, never mind to start from there on our way to other planets or even galaxies.
There are plans to reach Mars, and that will take a number of years of travelling already, and nobody knows yet how to return.

Therefore I repeat myself, before we even consider developing "quickly" some more advanced technologies to gain speed, we need to cut distances into manageable portions by launching gravity induced space stations, that can be reached in a "reasonable time".
I envisage them like "Motels", where you park your space vehicle in front of the "door", check in with your smart phone, and leave when you are ready for it.
Chains could develop like Accor, Moevenpick ; instead of Autogrill in Italy you could have "Spacegrill" , or Spacelodge, and others., just to name a few.
But before we get there, so to speak, we have to realise that there are other relevant problems to consider and dealt with :
There is no AA , RAC or ADAC out there yet , in case you have a break down, and spare parts availability is most likely restricted,
This of course could develop over time, with robots flying along the major travelling routes to seek out stranded space crafts and passengers along the way.
A network of repair shops could follow, and of course a graveyard for space junk is only the next step.
Whilst crashing is not an option, unless you are suicidal,
HUMAN FATALITIES will finally occur, let's face it, specifically on MONDAY MORNINGS, where everyone is still half asleep and might have mis-programmed the GPS system and Automated Driver Support System .
Further crashes, traffic jams, long delays and diversions seem to be inevitable.

My nightmare :
Even Space Bike Riders will appear !
Beyond that and other technical problems , there is one that concerns me most :
The culinary event,
meaning there is no supermarket on the way to Mars, or on Mars itself, nor does anything grow out there that is edible.
This indeed is a problem.
And some of the proposed or established solutions are not necessarily mouth-watering.
For the water, the human body acts like a water-maker on a boat, if you allow me that comparison.
But instead of salt water, the refined water is made of urine.
Ask the guys from the ISS, they will tell you how it tastes !!!!
Ok, let’s move on, as long as there is a bottle of wine in the fridge, it might work.
Food is more difficult.
But supplies can be provided if space is available for storage,
and regular replenishment might be organised by a future logistics company which we might like to call
"LIDL Space Supply“ or “ Harrods’ Universe Food Hall Service”,
with free of charge deliveries within the region of let’s say 500.000 miles,
supported by a network of “Cosmic Warehouses".
At least that should be more inviting and tasty than what the guys in the ISS get every day !!!!!

Further, it might also be possible to grow plants in space, with huge Greenhouse Horticulture, most likely organised and cultivated by Dutch companies, with artificial light and watering systems.
( Gosh, so much urine ! )
So all in all, space travelling within these confines is from my point of view not only possible, but also practical.
It can progress , new stations can be developed, new technologies developed, new "space" discovered.
Remember ? GO WEST, GET ON THE TRAIL !
And the financing ?
Well, as far as I can tell, “Quantitative Easing” is still ongoing, and Hedge Funds finance all kind of business ideas,
so here are forthcoming opportunities for the adventurous investor.
And now you want to know where the sailing comes into play, right ?
Well, that is easy to answer.
I rather have sailing boats travelling to Mars than cars.
Specifically not a convertible one ! Have you ever travelled in one for more than 5 hours ?
EXACTLY !!!!!
But with a sailing boat, you can travel in style.
You store all your supplies on board, the water, the food, you have heating, you have a quiet environment, only the sound of the Universe will follow you,
no rocket engines comparable to motorboats on the water,
you "just" unfold your solar sails, and off you go.
And if you are a music lover, you can listen to some classical music, like Rolling Stones, Queen, or Aerosmith.
Simple.

Alternatively, if you are in a hurry, use one of NASA's new space ships, it might be the answer to all your prayers. Enjoy ! |
