Dear Reader, it's been quite a while, I must confess. I am sorry , I did not want to hurt you,
make you feel as if I have abandoned you in your QUEST for silly questions that have no answers, or vice versa,
answers that have no questions , and therefore
nobody dares to question the answers !
I call it political correctness.
No , the reason why I have been so quiet lately is simple : I was occupied with other stuff.
You see, sometimes complicated questions have simple answers,.......if one is honest enough.
Anyway, who cares, what matters is that I found some energy again to write the
8th edition of The Munch Report in the new series of "The Cosmic Ocean",
a phrase created by the great Carl Sagan ( 1934 - 1996 ) , Astronomer, Cosmologist , Astro-Physicist, and else.
And a strong believer in UFO's and extraterrestrial life.
No wonder that his son, Nick Sagan, wrote several episodes in the Star Track franchise.
OK, you Spocks out there, here we go..........

LIGHT POLLUTION, WHAT LIGHT POLLUTION ?
Some of you might remember the previous report in which I tried to make you aware of the fact that you don' t see "anything" anymore. I mean whilst looking up !
Or better upwards into the sky. These days it is raining anyway, so you don't need to bother, but let's assume it is a clear night , and you want to see the stars....and unless you are on a mountain or a boat in the middle of the ocean, the city lights will take away all the vision of the Milky Way. What a shame !

Our Earth has become almost like a glowing star, at least in some places.
Day by day, or better night by night, we switch on the lights. As if we want to attract somebody's attention out there ........in outer space......... - in the cosmos - In the video on the right, taken from the Hubble telescope, you can see how much light we are creating, often regardless of its need. A breathtaking view though ! But if one now would imagine that this light might attract "somebody's" attention "out there", where ever "they" are, I guess "they" face the same problem : It is not only a distance problem but due to the "billions and billions" of stars in our known universe ( another Carl Sagan phrase ), I assume light pollution in its extended interpretation ( I know I know, I stretch again my hobby-cosmological ignorance ) also hampers "others" to see us. |

Do you realise that we are increasingly obsessed with finding extraterrestrial life ?
Just have a look at the following webpages such as : http://www.ufosightingsdaily.com/ or http://www.space.com/search-for-life/ and you will realise that there are a number of initiatives that search for other "intelligence" out there in the cosmos. No wonder, when you have a look at the video on the left, giving you a good impression about the "unlimited vastness" . In a panel discussion by NASA from July this year, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, a former astronaut, opened the discussion saying “it is improbable that in the limitless vastness of the universe we humans stand alone." HERE YOU HAVE IT ! And to make matters worse : "A major step in discovering potential extraterrestrial life will be the launch of the Transiting Exoplanet Surveying Satellite in 2017, James Webb Space Telescope in 2018 and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope - Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets early in the next decade." |
WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY POINT :
WHY

WHY do we think life out there is intelligent ?
WHY do we think life out there is peaceful ?
WHY do we think we can "colonise" or "befriend" them ?
WHY do we think we can beat them in case they are hostile ?
WHAT if they behave like some of us, or better some of our politicians, nations, etc, and shoot first and ask questions later ?
WHAT if they are a bunch of extraterrestrial nutcases roaming through space to conquer and destroy ?
WHAT IF "THEY" BELIEVE WE ARE THE SPOCKS ?
(sorry, Commander Spock ! )
WHO is in charge for this POTENTIALLY "LIFE CHANGING" APPROACH ?
WHO takes responsibility - in case there is still a soul alive after the event ?
( I have put this question deliberately into a smaller case, because rarely do I see politicians taking responsibility for anything ! )
You think these are silly questions, don't you. Well , as I said many times before, the Munch Report only consists of silly questions,
and does not give answers either.
But that is the reason why you read it, right ?
I just would like to remind you again of the history of Columbus, so much celebrated in my "Atlantic Adventures".
None of the societies he "discovered" exist any more, all extinguished by war, murder, and deseases.
ALL VANISHED !
And all in the name of
"we are the ones who discover, we are the ones who conquer, we are superior.".
RINGS A BELL ?
And at that moment in time, whilst realising that all might be too late, all might be lost,
I will go and have a last sip of Bellini in the Palazzino Pisani in Venice , watching the boat traffic on the Canale Grande,
listening to the little waves splashing against windows, and remember ..........
