Dear Reader, welcome to the 6th edition of The Munch Report. You might be equally surprised as I am that the progress of this web page is unstoppable, but it is a fact : The current number of visits has reached unexpected volumes which of course puts more pressure on the editor to maintain a high standard of illustrious stories that nobody is interested in reading, but are essential for the city dweller and middle-class disco goer in his or her's daily struggle to find answers to the un-answerable : What is happiness ? Are there sailing boats on other planets ? Where is all the fish gone ? etc etc. But may be this page strikes an accord with those out there who don't really mind getting no answer but rather joining in on the same silly questions ? Who knows ? Who even cares ? |

Why the Moon is scared !
And this edition of The Munch Report in continuation to the previous one, tries to answer this fundamental life changing question....

Tourists 'having fun' in Venice !

It is October now, and here we go again :
It is the month of Acqua Alta in Venice. And who else can be blamed if not the Moon. And why October ? Well , because due to the seasonal weather pattern, ie the first heavy autumn rain, and strong southerly winds ( Scirocco ), the water rises even higher during a spring tide ( full or new moon ). Every year again when the newspapers have nothing else to report on, it is Venice that provides them with a good headline : VENICE DOWN UNDER, so to speak. |

But of course it is not funny,
although the locals take it with a certain stoicism because they know that this natural occurrence was part of
the reason why Venice was built in the first place :
Its protection from predators via surrounding waters .
As simple as that.
But who wants to know ?
Specifically when arguments have been taken over by everybody else except the Venetians.
And by Venetian I mean those people who actually live the whole year in this city, and not just some weeks, and not on 'Terra Ferma', the mainland.
The first recorded exceptionally high water occurred on October 17th in the "ancient" year of 589 .
After that in the years 782,840,855,1102, and so on.
But as a fact , since roughly the 1930's Acqua Alta has risen dramatically both in height as much as in re-occurrence.
These days , there is 4-6 times Acqua Alta per year !

Is his vision too far fetched when he describes scenes where thousands of people ( can't be Venetians )
occupy the market places of Venice, Chioggia, Maestre, and as far as Treviso ,
Milan and of course London and New York,
regardless of whether they know where exactly Venice is and why it exists.
And what historians might later describe as the " Veneto Spring " ,
the crowds shouting slogans such as :
FREEDOM FOR VENICE , DOWN WITH THE MOON.

And the military planners of certain nations already counting the amount of nuclear warheads required to get rid of him, and by doing so "killing several cats with one stroke" : Trying "star-wars" for real, trying their new weapon systems, and by the way : No Moon no more, no slowing of the Earth no more, and yes , before I forget, the reason for this all ( may be ) : no Acqua Alta either . AS THE MOON pointed out to me there have been wars for lesser , and lately for no reasons at all. Here at least there is a concrete mission. It must be for the simple military and political mind of which there are seemingly plenty , the only perfect solution. And what if the Earth starts spinning faster again ? Well , don't worry, have you ever seen military planners and politicians thinking about the aftermath of their doing. Isn't this our modern attitude : SHOOT FIRST , THINK LATER ! As if these people can think at all ! |

it would take a very long time to get him back by "accretion" in case we would blast him away,
and realise later we still face the destruction of Venice ,
but for other reasons !
So what if the Acqua Alta in Venice is actually much more than just a perpetual re-occurrence of a phenomenon
driven by both nature and cosmic constellations ,
in fact what if it is
a man-made hypocrisy on a scale that is so typical for our age
of what the economists call "negative externalities", meaning what seemingly was good intention to improve our daily lives by giving us jobs, lifestyle, comfort, etc has so many negative by-products and / or consequences that we start to regret ?
Worse, knowing all this, the cure of symptoms is far easier than getting rid of some of the real causes.
Who wants to stir controversy in the age of political correctness ?

AND HE GETS QUITE RADICAL IN HIS IDEAS TO SAVE VENICE !
Whilst the sinking of Venice has finally been stopped because the extraction of ground water for the regional industries ceased in the 1980's and therefore the sea bed in the lagoon has consequently stabilised , the Moon knows like every sailor that deep channels like the one linking the adriatic sea with the port of Marghera attract and move more water than without. Now some proposals want to even dredge a new channel ( in red ) ! The reverse needs to happen , although getting rid of all deep channels would only be a first step ! Stopping the land fills and opening up the marches again of the 'Hinterland of Venice' as a second measure would make the waters disperse its volume, and flood areas again in times of High Water that used to be the habitat of numerous creatures and flora long destroyed by the refinery of Marghera. Actually, as a compliment to the memory of the Moon, he still remembers that the name "Marghera" in old Venetian ( dialect ) means : 'Mar gh' era : There was the sea ! . Its closure , dismantle and relocation to the existing deep water port off Triest might have cost as much as the new barriers built to close the lagoon of Venice ( known as the Moses project ) in times of too high waters. But the activation of these barriers will not reduce the total water volume in the Gulf of Venice, but rather re-distribute it to other areas such as Jesolo, Caorle, or the Lagoon of Grado, and as such socialise the problems of Venice to other areas. Constructing more barriers elsewhere will therefore only be a question of time. And may be, but just may be, the established barriers are too low already for future sea levels due to warm water expansion and melting ice caps ? But of course there is a high probability that Brussels will pay anyway, so where is the problem ? |

The Moon also observes with disbelief the current political discussions on reducing the maritime traffic that according to the ( non-residential ) student population and other academics destroys the foundations of Venice.
The efforts of "No Grandi Navi", No Big Ships, coming to Venice and through the Guidecca Channel, and the discussions between Port Authority and Venice City Council on whether Venice needs a port
or large vessels should go to a new port in Marghera, all these
discussions in the name of SAVING THE CITY are just too much intertwined with
political and economical interests,
and therefore not solving the real problems of Venice.

As the Moon watches the city almost every night ( and partly during the day ) it is easy to see
- if you want to see -
like in the films above, that it is
not
the big ships
( 1x per week, all in all may be 7-10 of them, between April and October ) )
that create the waves that cut into the foundations of Venice.
And they won't hit the river banks either, because they get stuck in mud beforehand.
No, the real problem is the constant 24/7 traffic of
ferries, taxi boats, transporters, and others.
Therefore if anybody really wants to save the city, so the Moon says,
you have to go back in time :
In and around Venice only
Gondolas and Sailing or Rowing Boats.
Like in the old days.
Some people might even move back into the city resulting in a new and healthy socio-eco structure and replacing the current Disney Land atmosphere.
And the Moon would peacefully shine on a city that would preserve its natural environment, with minimum interference,
quiet, solemn, gleeming in the light of the full Moon :
La Serenissima.
BEAUTIFUL !!!! UNIQUE !!!!
