Dear Reader,
I hope during these days of national elections in some still existing ( surprise , surprise ) Nation States,
their permanent presence on TV and other Media forums,
and their glorification of some candidates against some others ( “the BAD GUYS ),
you still find time and pleasure to read about some utter nonsense from the “WORLD BEYOND”, and if such is the case,
you have come to the right web page.

I am myself surprised about its success,
demonstrated by the ever increasing number of readers, ie it has bypassed at least the number 10 of devoted regular enthusiasts for my musings about the “inexplicable”, the “wrong questions”, and certainly “the wrong answers”, yes indeed even sometimes the “unbelievable”. This however is in no way comparable with Damien Hurst’s new exhibition in Venice : Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable. Because that exhibiton is UNBELIEVABLE ! |
Anyway, let’s not give too many compliments to my potential "competitors",
let’s just focus on the scheme of Cosmic Sailing. I have bounced already some ideas off in the previous parts on this subject, like the required technology whilst sailing through the universe, but here we will undoubtedly come now to another highlight of my crative thinking. How do we conquer unknown territory, in this case the vast distances of space. |
|
And here I concluded previously that we can learn from the people of Phoenicia,
who explored and developed over the period of 1000 years and more the Mediterranean coastline and beyond. Just for those who have only few spare time left due to their demanding city life and disco visits, I have included a summary of achievements by these explorers, sailors, traders and settlers , by which you can refresh your strained brains via the video on the left. So let me share my deepest thoughts and theories with you one more time on the specific subject of Space Exploration : “ The Phoenician Concept " |
Whenever I read about Space Travel, the main and almost only subject is
how can we go as fast a possible , i.e. beyond light speed,
from A to B.
And then the whole concept collapses
because so far nobody has come up with the right concept to overcome the misgivings of high speed travelling,
the power it needs , and the loads it can take to transport goods or people into space.
Now I just wonder
whether the Phoenicians, before they set foot into the water, literally speaking,
had this kind of mentallity and approach.
Because if yes, then they would not have gone far I guess.
In fact, they probably would have never left their safe ports and villages.

On the other side of the spectrum, and for other reasons,
there are those who argue that space travel is a waste of time and money,
and the resources could much better be used in solving existing, earthly problems.
And indeed , why bother.
Why should we want to visit our nearest Galaxy, the Alpha Centauri, which is roughly 25 trillion miles away.
So here is the problem :
WE KNOW TOO MUCH !

Had the Phoenicians or Christopher Columbus known, precisely,
what expected them beyond their home ports, they might have been subdued by the vast distances they had to cover with their existing technology, that they might not have bothered , and stayed at home, feet on the chair, glass of red wine in their hands, fireplace on, and waited for their retirement age. Really, like Conan the Barbarian. PS. Dear Arnie, pls forgive me for dragging you into this subject ! |
Sorry, where was I ?
Yes, Alpha Centauri, or indeed even our own Galaxy, the Milky Way.
Is it only because it might offer similar terrestrial life conditions that we want to go there in one long trip that contains so many unknowns ?
Why do we discuss flying to Mars when we have no way to return ?
Are we seeking COSMIC MARTYRS ?
This is not in the spirit of Captain Kirk !!!!!!
Did the Phoenecians sail to America ?
Well, some say yes, but if, then surely not without experience in long distance sailing,
with “ new technologies” and strategies in place based on knowledge and experience, and a
network of support stations !
And this might be the first answer to our space adventure. We need to cut distances into “manageable” parts, where we can replenish and refuel.
We need a network of “stations” on our way into the unknown, where we can retreat, replenish, recover, re-design and refuel.
Just as the Phoenecians, and later on the Venetians did.
Makes sense ?

Space travel has so far always been limited by few but important factors :
Gravity or the lack of it.
As a result, without going into further scientific explanations ,
it needs extreme forces to bring any sort of load into orbit alone,
regardless of what is needed beyond to keep an installation going with electrical supply.
The Voyager program ,
launched in 1977, runs on a minituare nuclear power station,
but it fuels expires in around 2025.
Nevertheless,
manageable.

More challenging would be to bring a gravity induced space station into orbit or beyond.
Gravity is required for us humans otherwise bones and muscles would deteriorate over time.
To create this condition the spacecraft, or shall we call it “spaceship” as in” Spaceship Enterprise “ ,
needs a centrifuge, a rotating gravity generating part at least for the living quarters.

Easy. The design has been around since as early as 1869 in a book called “The Brick Moon” by Edward Hale, however with a more serious scientific approach by Wernher von Braun in 1951, when he published his design for a rotating wheel space station. No surprise here, we visited the same high school. No , not me first, me after him, actually many years, you….. |
In comparison,
the International Space Station
took also more than 10 years to build, at a cost of $100 billion,
but the new station has 2.9 million times more space.
Now that is what Donald Trump would call a deal,
right, Mr President?

And even better :
This proposed construction would be large enough to transport all the people and equipment required to set up colonies as far as Mars,
which it would orbit,
and provide a safe environment whilst a base there is being constructed by robotic systems.
Great. Done.
The only problem remaining : How do we get there if we want to get there ?
Well, I thought you might ask that question,
in fact I expected this from my intelligent though from midlife crisis affected readers.
Now the Phoenicians took slightly more than 1000 years to expand their knowledge and sailing territories.
So I would say :
Patience, folks, Patience !
You have to wait for the remaining mysteries to be resolved by my infinite thought-process of explaining the inexplicable.
You just have to wait impatiently for the next edition of this fantastic report.
STAY TUNED !
