ATLANTIC ADVENTURES

Dear Reader, the following BLOGS describe my travels in the Atlantic , mainly on my Sailing Boat "Champagne" .
Specifically in 2012/2013 I took her from Croatia to the Caribbean and back. Most of my stories reflect on that journey, describing all the pros and cons of long-distance sailing, but also entertaining the reader with historical notes, anecdotes and hear-say stories.

As most of these stories are inter-twined and connected, it makes sense to read them from the beginning.

Yours, Master Mike.

ENJOY !

Our first trip to the boat this year. Sitting at the airport in Zagreb. Pieter , Jim and I that is. You will find us on the pic later on. Gosh, and what a trip it was. We left London on the 22nd, early in the morning from Gatwick. To Zagreb. Then a hired car. I didn't see any roadsigns so i followed the sun south. Until the motorway bent towards the NE. Wrong direction ! Have to improve my navigation before the ARC starts !

Finally arrived, and we realised how little had been done so far. Wrong liferaft ! Croatian Dealer had confirmed all we asked for, but nothing was true. No documentation with the raft , no nothing. Is this Europe ?

No insurance papers ready either, no work on deck as specified, nothing. OK, off we go, let's start........with a serious flu. It started with me already on the day of arrival, and continued the whole trip. Jim came down with it yesterday. Awful, really awful. Anyway, managed some working days, labelled the whole boat, it looks from the inside as if she is being held together by label stickers ! Thank you Jim ! Then the odd hoist into the mast, and the days are gone already. What have we achieved ? After we left the marina to head back to Zagreb, we realised we had all ships papers and documents still in the car. So again, turn around Mike, let's go back. Wasted more than an hour on that one !

In Zagreb Fati and her gorgeous girlfriends waited for us. And wine, and food ! Finally, heaven has arrived. Pity it can't last.

Bye bye, Croatia, until May, when the TRIO INFERNALE will return to give you more hassle. Hopefully Barbara is still in the Blue Frog Marina restaurant, so Jim and Pieter can enjoy things even more !

Mike

AND THEN THERE IS A BEGINNING (2012)

And then there is a beginning.....and it is FEAR.

This is the first ever blog SY Champagne is releasing, and the first fear is that I can't handle the technology provided by Mailasail. I have been on this now for 3 days, trying to establish links, learning new skills, setting up the e-mail account, sheer sweat and stress. The only good news is that I am not alone ........... Friday the 9th of March we had our first ever crew meeting: Jim, Fati, Pieter, Ian and myself. All went well - thanks to the italian restaurant owned by a GREEK !  We have a plan. The beginning is set, the dice is rolled. Not all of us will be able to take part in the whole journey, that starts in Sibenik/Croatia this August, then via Malta, Gibraltar, Madeira, Gran Canaria, St.Lucia, then sailing first south and then north between the Caribbean Islands, and leaving again in April next year for the long journey back via Azores, Gibraltar, Palermo and Sibenik. All in all more than 11000 NM. But we'll see....we are only at the beginning.

Back to the fear factor : Fati, Pieter and Ian attended their Safety and Sea Survival Course in Hamble. And the community pool scared the hell out of them all. Now just imagine all this with waves 3-5m high, B/F 8, and a little bit of rain on top.....well guys, you better not fall overboard and let the boat not have a leak ! As simple as that. But the fear factor has been introduced. Good, so we all will be a lot more careful ! It is just a pitty that nobody took a picture of all these wet bodies in the pool. Would have been fun to show it one day to our grandchildren. I am sure they would all have had a good laugh.

The other fear or better worry is that we will get everything ready in time. It is a little bit difficult to do all this when you are not constantly on board yourself, so all goes via e-mail and trust. But this is what it is. No turning back now. End of March Jim, Pieter and I will travel to Croatia to set everything in motion and start with the check-list. Fati in the meantime will finish her menu planning , and Ian wants to "chill-out". Good lad !

SO ALL IN ALL : LET'S DO IT.

Mike
